Register the death (within 5 days in England & Wales; 8 in Scotland)

Why it matters

Registering produces the death certificate and gives you the "Tell Us Once" reference that notifies most of government in one go.

How to do it

1. Book an appointment at a register office (usually for the area where the death occurred).
2. Take the person's details; you will get a Certificate for a Burial or Cremation ("the green form") and can buy death certificates — order several certified copies.
3. Ask for the Tell Us Once reference.

• Get the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (and medical examiner sign-off)
