Find the will and apply for probate (or letters of administration)

Why it matters

Probate is the legal right to deal with the estate. Banks and the Land Registry generally need it before releasing larger assets or transferring property.

How to do it

1. Find the will — check with their solicitor, bank, or a will-storage service. The named executor applies for the Grant of Probate.
2. If there is no will, the closest relative applies for Letters of Administration and the estate passes under intestacy rules.
3. You can apply yourself (GOV.UK) or via a solicitor. Small estates may not need probate at all — banks set their own thresholds.
