Register the death at the Civil Registry (Registro Civil) — within 24h

Why it matters

Registration produces the official Certificado de Defunción you will need in multiple certified copies for banks, pensions, and inheritance.

How to do it

1. The funeraria usually files this for you within 24 hours.
2. Afterwards, request several certified copies (literal) of the Certificado de Defunción — you will need many.
3. Some registries now require a prior appointment (cita previa) online.

Do this first

• Obtain the medical death certificate (Certificado Médico de Defunción)

This unlocks

• Burial/cremation licence (licencia de enterramiento o incineración)
• Request the Last Will certificate (Certificado de Últimas Voluntades)
• Notify the banks and present the documents
• Notify Seguridad Social and claim survivor benefits
