Notify the banks and present the documents
Why it matters
Accounts are blocked on notification of death and only released to proven heirs once inheritance tax is settled. Direct debits for the home should be allowed to continue in most cases.
How to do it
- Notify each bank with a death certificate; the account is frozen to most movements.
- Essential household bills can often continue; ask each bank.
- Funds are released to heirs once the inheritance process and tax are completed.
