Get the death legally pronounced
Why it matters
A legal pronouncement of death must come first; it starts the certificate process.
How to do it
- In a hospital/hospice, staff handle it. At home with hospice, call the hospice line.
- At home without hospice and unexpectedly, call 911 — paramedics/medical examiner respond.
- If the death was sudden or unattended, the medical examiner/coroner may investigate before a certificate is issued.
