Flag the credit files to prevent identity theft ("ghosting")
Why it matters
Criminals target the recently deceased to open credit. Flagging the credit files early is one of the most protective things you can do.
How to do it
- Notify the three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) in writing with a copy of the death certificate; ask for a "deceased — do not issue credit" flag.
- Request a copy of the credit report to see all open accounts.
- Avoid publishing the full birth date plus home address in the obituary — it is a gift to fraudsters.
