Why it matters

If the person wished to donate organs or their body to science, this is only possible for a short window and is usually arranged with the hospital or donation registry quickly.

How to do it

1. Ask hospital/hospice staff — they often raise it, but not always.
2. Check for a donor card, registry registration, or a note in their will/wishes.
3. If donating the body to medical science, a prior arrangement with the institution is usually required.
